The Nueva Espana Flota sailed from Veracruz on the 25th of August 1724. After
leaving the Bahama Channel and sailing towards Bermuda, a fierce hurricane forced
the ships of this fleet to head south while trying to out run the storm.
An unknown number of ships, carrying a great amount of treasures, were lost near
Samana Bay on the Dominican Coast. The Capitana of the fleet, Nuestra Senora de
Guadalupe y San Antonio, sank on the 12th of September in deep water near that bay.
The Almiranta, La Tolosa wrecked at Cape Samana while many other naos wrecked
upon the reefs of the bay. Over 120 lives were lost in all.
