In 1622, the Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha sank off the Florida Keys on its return voyage from Havana to Spain during a savage hurricane. For more than 350 years, the Atocha's treasure lay in nearly fifty-five feet of water off the Coast of Key West.

In 1985, after 16 years of pain staking research and searching, Mel Fisher and his crew of Treasure Salvors, recovered over $500 million in treasure and artifacts from the ships main pile. The artifacts now allow us to better understand Spanish Colonial life in 1622.
